A Converse to Banach's Fixed Point Theorem and its CLS Completeness

چکیده
Banach’s fixed point theorem for contraction maps has been widely used to analyze the convergence of iterative methods in non-convex problems. It is a common experience, however, that iterative maps fail to be globally contracting under the natural metric in their domain, making the applicability of Banach’s theorem limited. We explore how generally we can apply Banach’s fixed point theorem to establish the convergence of iterative methods when pairing it with carefully designed metrics. Our first result is a strong converse of Banach’s theorem, showing that it is a universal analysis tool for establishing global convergence of iterative methods to unique fixed points, and for bounding their convergence rate. In other words, we show that, whenever an iterative map globally converges to a unique fixed point, there exists a metric under which the iterative map is contracting and which can be used to bound the number of iterations until convergence. We illustrate our approach in the widely used power method, providing a new way of bounding its convergence rate through contraction arguments. We next consider the computational complexity of Banach’s fixed point theorem. Making the proof of our converse theorem constructive, we show that computing a fixed point whose existence is guaranteed by Banach’s fixed point theorem is CLS-complete. We thus provide the first natural complete problem for the class CLS, which was defined in [DP11] to capture the complexity of problems such as P-matrix LCP, computing KKT-points, and finding mixed Nash equilibria in congestion and network coordination games.

Suzuki-type fixed point theorems for generalized contractive mappings that characterize metric completeness
Inspired by the work of Suzuki in [T. Suzuki, A generalized Banach contraction principle that characterizes metric completeness, Proc. Amer. Math. متن کاملSimultaneous generalizations of known fixed point theorems for a Meir-Keeler type condition with applications
In this paper, we first establish a new fixed point theorem for a Meir-Keeler type condition. As an application, we derive a simultaneous generalization of Banach contraction principle, Kannan's fixed point theorem, Chatterjea's fixed point theorem and other fixed point theorems. Some new fixed point theorems are also obtained.
متن کاملCommon Fixed Point Results on Complex-Valued $S$-Metric Spaces
Banach's contraction principle has been improved and extensively studied on several generalized metric spaces. Recently, complex-valued $S$-metric spaces have been introduced and studied for this purpose. In this paper, we investigate some generalized fixed point results on a complete complex valued $S$-metric space. To do this, we prove some common fixed point (resp. fixed point) theorems usin...
متن کاملUnique common coupled fixed point theorem for four maps in $S_b$-metric spaces
In this paper we prove a unique common coupled fixed point theorem for two pairs of $w$-compatible mappings in $S_b$-metric spaces satisfying a contrctive type condition. We furnish an example to support our main theorem. We also give a corollary for Junck type maps.
متن کاملON COMPACTNESS AND G-COMPLETENESS IN FUZZY METRIC SPACES
In [Fuzzy Sets and Systems 27 (1988) 385-389], M. Grabiec in- troduced a notion of completeness for fuzzy metric spaces (in the sense of Kramosil and Michalek) that successfully used to obtain a fuzzy version of Ba- nachs contraction principle. According to the classical case, one can expect that a compact fuzzy metric space be complete in Grabiecs sense. We show here that this is not the case,...
